It’s no secret that Cyprus is one of the prettiest places to visit in the Mediterranean. However, there are a few villages in particular that are well worth a visit. Here are 5 of our favourites, including our top picks for things to do while you’re there.
Kalopanayiotis
This historic village is hidden away in the very heart of the Troödos Mountains. With cobbled streets, ancient chapels and churches, and ornately tiled rooftops - all backed by beautiful greenery, a visit to Kalopanayiotis is well worth it for the views alone.
Our top picks:
Visit the village’s 16th-century Venetian bridge - a beautiful shady spot where the mountain’s historical healing waters run through. Then, hike up one of the shady nature trails and soak up some of the best scenery for miles around.
Omodos
Omodos is known for wine-making and is surrounded by fields of vines and fruit orchards. This pretty village sits up high in the Troödos Mountains and is home to a Medieval wine press, the True Cross Monastery, and charming stone streets lined with shops selling handmade lace, trinkets, and freshly baked Arkatena pretzels.
Our top picks:
Pay a visit to the Ktima Gerolemo winery and enjoy a tour of the vineyards before tasting some of their best-selling wines. Or, head over to Omodos Square and sit down for coffee under the sycamore trees.
Lania
Lania is a typical Cypriot village that’s said to take its name from Lana, daughter of Dionysus, God of Wine. Think winding flower-laden streets, whitewashed cottages, and a handful of tavernas serving locally grown and pressed wines. You’ll also find black and white photos displayed around the village to showcase what life was like years ago.
Our top picks:
Head over to the local art gallery and browse the beautiful collections of artwork for sale. If you visit the village in May, you’ll be invited inside homes and gardens by the local residents as part of their ‘Lanes and Courtyards of Lania’ event.
Lofou
Lofou is a leafy, hillside village that is renowned for its traditional architecture and beautiful cobbled streets. It’s surrounded by grapevines and groves of almond trees, and is perfect for those looking to spend an hour or two meandering through quiet streets in search of local tavernas.
Our top picks:
Pay a visit to Lofou Elementary School - a stunning stone building that’s steeped in history. Then, follow the flower-lined Lofou walking trail to the traditional faucet of Elitji where villagers would go to collect water.
Lefkara
Sitting pretty at the foot of the Troödos Mountains is Lefkara - a characterful village that’s crisscrossed with winding streets lined with terracotta-roofed buildings. The village is split into two parts - Pano Lefkara and Kato Lefkara (higher and lower Lefkara) - and the villagers were traditionally renowned for their embroidery and silver jewellery-making skills.
Our top picks:
Pick up some traditional Cypriot sweet treats (loukoumia) at Ta Oraia Lefkara before heading up to Terra Oliva Organic Olive Farm to sample local olive oils and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding mountains.
Kato Drys
Just a stone’s throw from Lefkara is Kato Drys. Like the other mountain villages, it’s famed for producing grapes, olives, citrus fruits and almonds, and promises beautiful views from every direction. It’s also not far from the 15th century Agios Minas Monastery.
Our top picks:
Visit in the morning and enjoy brunch at a lovely little place called Jars (be sure to book in advance). On Saturdays, there's a local kafenio that does kebabs, which is also well worth making a reservation for. Or, pay a visit to Platanos - the charming restaurant under the village’s huge plane tree.
