Cyprus is renowned for its sea, sand, and providing plenty of year-round sunshine. And while its climate and scenery make it the perfect place to simply get away and relax for a while, it’s also a paradise for adventure sports fans.
Here are some of the top adventure sports you should try when visiting the island.
Surfing
Cyprus is one of the lesser-known places in Europe to catch some waves. You’ll find the best surf spots along the west coast of the island. Although you can surf all year round, the conditions are best during spring and autumn (or, more specifically, March and November). Most beaches with water sports facilities will always have plenty of boards for hire.
Kite surfing
The island’s offshore breeze makes it the perfect place for kitesurfing. There are places to kite surf all around the island. However, during the summer season when the beaches are busier, you’ll need to head to a designated kite surfing spot like Ladies Mile, Santa Barbara, and the beaches around Pissouri Bay.
Windsurfing
The coastal breezes and warm waters have long made Cyprus a favourite with windsurfers. If you’re a beginner or not very experienced on the waves, a good time to windsurf is during the summer months when the winds are less strong and more predictable. Lots of beaches have equipment for hire - but we recommend enquiring in advance during the high season.
Mountain biking
Cyprus is famous for its mountain scenery, and many of the island’s peaks are crisscrossed with biking trails. While the higher ground can provide a little relief from the summer heat, we’d advise exploring the island on two wheels during spring and autumn when temperatures are still warm, but not too stifling.
Hiking
From short rambles to more challenging hikes that take you high up into the mountains, Cyprus has something for everyone. Avoid the midday sun if you’re planning a hike during the summer months and always take plenty of water with you. A visit to a vineyard is often a great way to break up your climb. Plus, you’ll be rewarded with some incredible views.
Scuba diving
Around the Cyprus coastline, there’s a whole world to explore underneath the waves. Visit the colourful reefs at Pissouri Bay, dive to the world-famous Zenobia shipwreck near Larnaca, or search for ancient pottery off the coast of Paphos. The seawater stays above 25 degrees as late as October, so there are still opportunities to dive even after the summer season has passed.
Sailing
There’s no better way to see the Cyprus coastline than by sailboat. Whether you take a boat out at one of the marinas and spend your time fishing and sightseeing, or charter a boat during the late afternoon and simply watch the sun go down - the perfect place to be is out on the water.
