Cyprus is an island well-known for its summer sunshine. But it’s also a great destination for a winter getaway too. Whether you’re looking for relaxation, culture or adventure, here are our top recommendations for things to do in Cyprus in winter.
Hike in the Akamas National Park
The Akamas peninsula on the west coast of the island is popular with hikers throughout the year. But during the winter months, you’ll escape the high season heat and still be rewarded with beautiful views. There are several circular walking routes to choose from, including the Smigies Trail, the Aphrodite Trail and Adonis Trail. Some span the length of the coastline, while others take you through acres of lush greenery in the heart of the National Park.
Go skiing in the Troodos mountains
The Troodos mountain range can be found on the western side of Cyprus and, from January to the end of March, is where skiers come from all over the island and beyond to make the most of the snow. The Troodos mountains are home to the only ski centre on the island. There’s a ski school, winter sports equipment for hire, and four ski lifts that take you to the summits of the slopes.
Visit the ancient ruins of Kourion
This celebrated archaeological site was once the island’s most important city-kingdom. And with towering ruins, well-preserved mosaics, and a magnificent open-air theatre that has now been restored to host modern-day events, Kourion is one of the best places in Cyprus to soak up some history. In fact, the site is well worth a visit for the amazing sea views alone.
Explore the Choirokitia archaeological site
The UNESCO World Heritage site at Choirokitia is an ancient Neolithic settlement that experts consider to be one of the most important prehistoric sites in the eastern Mediterranean. The round stone houses are remarkably well preserved, and even the vegetation that can be found nearby has been grown there since Neolithic times.
Take a road trip around the villages of Lefkara and Kato Drys
The quieter winter months are the perfect time of year to enjoy a road trip around the island’s quaint mountain villages. Lefkara, and its smaller neighbour, Kato Drys, are traditional villages that are famed for producing olives, almonds and citrus fruits. However, during the low season, are beautiful places to eat, drink, and explore - without the crowds.
